Taking my shadows for a walk |
After moving from Florida to Minnesota as a young adult, I began
struggling with depression and anxiety (my shadows), which worsened in the
winter. A few years ago, I challenged myself to go outside every day
during the winter, no matter the weather, and take a photo of something
interesting and/or beautiful. To hold myself accountable, I posted the photos
on Facebook and started this blog. I discovered
that a daily photo walk helped keep the shadows at bay—and then I started
hearing from friends that my photos also helped them to find the gifts and joy in a
cold, dark winter. As winter turned to spring, summer, and fall, I continued to
walk and share photos and it has become an important part of my life (and great
therapy!). I have discovered the magic of photography in taming the shadows of
depression and anxiety. By exploring the beauty and colors in nature and the outdoor
world around me, I find the joy in the ordinary.
